Well, as the artist David Hockney as already said, “they can’t cancel Spring’’. So even in these difficult times for us all, it is going to happen!
Normally, as we get ready to put the clocks forward, the small voluntary group that organises the Bedminster Winter Lantern Parade Project each year, goes out into the community to raise the necessary funds to enable our spectacular local event to begin in the autumn.
But this is not a normal year, for businesses, schools, community centres and groups – not normal for everyone in our BS3 area.
The project increasingly relies on the generosity of local business to make it happen and many of these great people are under a great deal of pressure right now.
We’ve taken the decision that, at this point, it would be wrong to focus on our fundraising effort when there are far more important things to cope with and do.
We are calling a halt to our fundraising efforts, and will not be asking local business to sponsor us at this time.
Depending on the impact and the duration of the present exceptional circumstances this might mean that we won’t be able to start our project this autumn, which means there might not be a Bedminster Winter Lantern Parade next January. That’s a particular sad thing to say as it would have been our 10th anniversary event.
We haven’t made a final decision yet, but if we can’t begin our fundraising effort by the middle of summer then we won’t be able to commission the creative team to start working in local schools and community centres this autumn.
Stay well, keep it local and we hope to have more news as we all come through this.
